Get Away to The Great Escape & Splashwater Kingdom

The Great Escape & Splashwater Kingdom is a combination amusement park and water park in Lake George, New York. Lake George is a lovely lakeside town in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains, about an hour north of Albany.

The Great Escape started out as Storytown USA in 1954, and the name was changed to The Great Escape in 1983. Premier Parks bought the park in 1996, and The Great Escape is now part of the Six Flags family of amusement and water parks.

The big event at The Great Escape for summer 2008 is the opening of Wiggles World on May 10. The park is having a celebration for Wiggles lovers of all ages with a live concert on June 15. The new themed area will be home to famous Wiggles characters Dorothy the Dinosaur, Captain Feathersword, Wags the Dog and Henry the Octopus. It also features Wiggly rides like the Big Red Cars, the Big Red Planes and Dorothy’s Rosy Tea Cups.

But don’t go thinking that The Great Escape is a kiddie park. It happens to be home to The Comet, a world-famous roller coaster that celebrated its 80th birthday in 2007. The Comet is legendary in coaster circles, and is considered by many to be the best wooden roller coaster in North America. The Great Escape rescued The Comet from destruction back in 1988, when it acquired the ride from Crystal Beach, a defunct amusement park near Niagara Falls, Ontario.

The Great Escape is divided into five themed areas: the Fest Area – where most of the thrill rides are, including The Comet; Ghost Town – a throw back to the Old West; LOONEY TUNES NATIONAL PARK – where Bugs Bunny and his closest pals hang out; Storytown – which pays respect to the park’s history; and Wiggles World – the newest addition just for the little ones, located within the Fest Area.

Splashwater Kingdom is the wet and wild part of a visit to The Great Escape. In 2008, Splashwater Kingdom is opening a brand new thrill-filled water ride, the Mega Wedgie. The name pretty much says it all.

Splashwater Kingdom is open daily from May 24 – Sept. 1.

The Great Escape is open weekends only through most of May. It opens permanently for the summer season on June 11 and stays open daily through Sept.1, when it reverts back to weekends only until Nov. 2.

General admission to The Great Escape is $39.99 per person. If you buy your tickets online, you can get a discounted rate of $34.99. Children under 48” tall are $24.99, and kids under 2 get in free. Entrance to the park after 4 p.m. is $24.99 per person. Parking at The Great Escape is $15.

Season passes to The Great Escape are $69.99, and a seasonal parking pass is $30.
